MATH-ish
Chapter 4: Mathematics in the World
Summary:
Mathematical diversity highlights the importance of cultural diversity and varied approaches to mathematics, valuing different perspectives and thinking styles. Racial segregation in schools is linked to achievement gaps, and research suggests reorganizing schools to promote equality. In preparing students for success in college-level mathematics, students must be fluent in number sense, data literacy and problem solving, and linear relationships. In this chapter we are introduced to the concept of "math-ish," where numbers used in real life are often imprecise estimates, referred to as "ish numbers." Understanding whether a calculation result is reasonable is crucial. The importance of discussing data to enhance comprehension is also emphasized.
Key Math-ish Principle(s):
Understanding mathematical ideas in the world.
Key Ideas/Themes:
Mathematical Diversity and Cultural Appreciation: Emphasizing the value of diverse cultural perspectives and approaches in mathematics, which enriches understanding and problem-solving.
Impact of Racial Segregation on Achievement: Highlighting the link between racial segregation in schools and achievement gaps, with a call for reorganizing schools to promote equality, as suggested by Reardon's research.
Practical and Relevant Math Education: Advocating for teaching concepts that matter in real life, such as data analysis, problem-solving, and proportionality, as well as understanding the practical use of imprecise "ish numbers."
Critical Thinking and Reasonableness: Stressing the importance of developing the ability to judge the reasonableness of calculation results and fostering discussions around data to enhance comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Reflection Questions:
After reading this chapter reflect on the following questions. Think about:
What makes sense?
What can you apply in the classroom right now?
What do you still need help with?
